SAEDNEWS: Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has nominated Mehrdad Akhlaqi to become the country’s Minister of Defense and submitted his name to Parliament for a vote of confidence.
According to Saednews,Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has nominated senior defense official Mohammad-Reza Akhlaqi for the position of defense minister, formally introducing him in a letter to Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf.
In the letter, Pezeshkian asked lawmakers to review Akhlaqi’s qualifications and proposed plans in accordance with parliamentary regulations.
Under Iran’s parliamentary procedures, the relevant parliamentary commission will examine the nominee’s plans before lawmakers hold a confidence vote on Akhlaqi at the earliest possible opportunity.
Akhlaqi is a senior official at Iran’s Ministry of Defense. He has previously served as head of the Aerospace Industries Organization and held several other senior positions within the country’s defense sector.
The nomination comes following the death of Major General Aziz Nasirzadeh, Iran’s former defense minister, who was killed in attacks on Tehran at the beginning of the 40-day war.
Following Nasirzadeh’s death, Pezeshkian appointed Brigadier General Majid Ebn al-Reza as caretaker defense minister.
The Iranian Parliament is now expected to review Akhlaqi’s credentials and proposed policies before deciding whether to grant him a vote of confidence.
