The Five-Legged Chinese Cow That Locals Consider Bad Luck

According to SAEDNEWS, citing Sarpoosh, images of the “mutant” cow, which is now eight months old and lives on a farm in China's Shanxi Province, show an extra leg growing from the animal’s back.

Mr. Zhao, the owner of the cow, said the birth of the unusual animal caused him difficulties because some of his neighbors consider it a bad omen.

Last week, a report about the cow was broadcast on a television program on Shanxi Provincial TV. According to the report, the cow weighed nearly 10 kilograms at birth. Thanks to careful care and attention, its weight has now reached 100 kilograms.

Mr. Zhao told reporters that as the cow grows larger, its fifth leg continues to grow as well. He added that the extra limb even moves when touched.

He also expressed concern that more and more neighbors had become aware of the cow’s existence and believed the animal would bring misfortune.

Liu Bizhan, an animal husbandry expert from the same region, urged villagers not to panic. He explained that the cow suffers from a condition known as polymelia, a rare congenital disorder characterized by the presence of extra limbs.

Polymelia is an extremely rare condition. According to a research assessment published in 2002, fewer than four out of every 100,000 calves born worldwide are affected by additional limbs.
