A Journey to Margoon Waterfall: Serenity in the Heart of Fars

First, let's get to know Margoon Waterfall…

In the list of spring waterfalls in the world, Margoon sits at the top. This waterfall is the tallest spring waterfall in the world, and even in the height of summer, its water temperature is below 10 degrees Celsius! Waterfalls are usually rivers that flow from heights into a valley, but this is where Margoon differs from other waterfalls. As I mentioned at the beginning, this waterfall is spring-fed, meaning its water comes from mountain springs and falls to the ground!

Margoon Waterfall has a height of about 70 meters and a width of 100 meters. For the convenience of tourists, parking lots, restrooms, and pavilions have been built around this waterfall so that visitors can enjoy themselves without worrying about the safety of their cars or finding a shady spot to sit.

Behind Margoon Waterfall, there is no river, and as I mentioned, it is made up of several springs that create this beautiful waterfall. The water from these springs is so abundant that the river continues toward Sepidan. Because Margoon is located at an altitude of 2,200 meters above sea level, its climate is cold, and during the cold seasons, icicles can be seen around the waterfall, which doubles the beauty of Margoon.

Around the Margoon River, there are apple orchards, hawthorns, barberry bushes, and countless forest trees, turning this area into a paradise on earth. The people of Margoon village are Lurs and speak the Luri language. The locals are very hospitable and ready to welcome tourists.

What does Margoon actually mean?

You might be wondering, why Margoon? Why not another name? The name Margoon, as it appears, means “like a snake.” Well, in answer to this question, I should say that the water of this waterfall flows in thread-like streams, descending downward. Most waterfalls flow over wide paths, but Margoon Waterfall consists of several thin, long streams resembling a snake.

The beautiful nature of Margoon Waterfall

Since this area has a good climate and abundant water, naturally various plants grow here. In Margoon, you will see trees that are rarely found anywhere else in the country. Many people have built fruit orchards along the Margoon River and harvest various fruits from them. Other trees have also grown along the river, most of them wild, giving Margoon a unique charm.

Here, it rains as much as you can imagine, and in winter, snow and rain mix—a combination rarely seen elsewhere in Iran. Overall, the climate of Margoon is cold, with an average temperature of about 10 degrees Celsius. However, you should be aware that in winter, the weather in this area becomes so cold that the flowing waters of the waterfall also freeze.

Best Time to Visit Margoon Waterfall

Factors such as greenery, abundant water, and elevation above sea level have caused this region to have a low average temperature. If you visit Margoon Waterfall in late autumn or winter, you will experience bone-chilling cold around it, which may discourage you from staying in the area. Of course, in winter, icicles form beside the waterfall. These icicles bring beauty to the waterfall, and watching them is truly delightful.

I believe that there is no place on earth whose spring does not have a special charm, especially if it is Margoon Waterfall, surrounded by gardens and greenery. I am sure that the view you see in spring at Margoon Waterfall cannot be witnessed in any other season. Of course, we should not overlook summer in this region. This waterfall is one of the best places to escape the summer heat, and you can spend memorable days there.

In my opinion, spring and summer are the best seasons to choose for visiting Margoon Waterfall. However, you must decide whether you want to see snow and ice and whiteness or greenery, the sound of flowing water, and freshness! You should pay attention to the fact that in the cold seasons, you must wear warm clothes and carry some equipment, such as a portable gas stove, so that no problem arises.

In winter, before heading to Margoon, make sure that the village roads are open, because due to the mountainous terrain and frequent precipitation, the paths may be blocked.

You can take memorable photos of these trees and the beautiful scenery.
