Imagine it's lunchtime or dinnertime, and you want to have some pickles with your meal. Or maybe, in the morning before heading to work, you want some butter and jam to boost your energy, but no matter what you do, the lid of the jam or pickle jar is so tightly sealed that it won’t open. It's so tight that either your wrist starts to hurt, or your nails break! In such cases, you might struggle with the jar lid for so long that you end up giving up and deciding not to have the pickles or jam.

When you can't open glass jars, a wave of frustration hits you in the kitchen. Sometimes, the lids are so tightly sealed that even running hot water over the jar won’t help. It almost feels like manufacturers intentionally make it this way so we spend more time with their products! But don't worry, fortunately, there are simple tricks to open any glass jar lid. You can easily open any glass container you have within seconds.

Simple tricks to open pickle and jam jars

Here are some methods you can use to open pickle and jam jars:

  1. Opening a jar with tape
All you need is some tape! You might be wondering, “How can I use tape to open a glass jar lid?” Well, it’s really simple! Here's what you need to do:

    • Cut a piece of tape about 20 cm long and stick it on the lid of the jar, covering about three-quarters of the circumference of the lid. Leave a few centimeters without tape.

    • Hold the end of the tape with one hand, and use your other hand to hold the jar steady. Then gently pull on the tape.

    • This trick is very cheap and won’t cost you anything. You'll see that the jar lid will loosen easily. From now on, you won’t have any issues with sealed glass jars in your kitchen!

  2. Opening a jar with warm water
Hold the jar lid under warm water for 20 seconds, but don’t put the glass itself under the water. The warm water causes the lid to expand, making it easier to open. Afterward, twist the lid with a dry, clean cloth.

  3. Tapping the lid
To easily open a pickle or jam jar, tap the lid a few times with the back of a spoon or another object to release the air trapped inside the jar. Then twist the lid with a dry, clean cloth to prevent your hand from slipping, making it easier to open.

  4. Using a hairdryer
Heating the lid causes it to expand and break the seal. Use a hairdryer to heat the edges of the lid until it expands and can be easily opened. Avoid heating plastic lids, as they may melt; this method is suitable for glass jars with metal lids. Be careful, as heating the lid might make it too hot, so use a towel or gloves to open it.

  5. Releasing the air from the jar
To open the jar lid, use a sharp object or a thin edge, like a knife or the back of a spoon, to insert underneath the lid and gently press upwards to release the air inside. Then, twist the lid 90 degrees, and you should be able to open it easily.

These tricks will help you open any jar lid with ease!
