SCO Rallies the Global South: United Rebuke of US–Israeli Strikes on Iran

According to Saed News, Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi arrived in Beijing on July 15, 2025, to address the SCO Council of Foreign Ministers, praising the body’s “steadfast solidarity” following what Tehran terms “unprovoked” Israeli and American attacks on its nuclear facilities. “The SCO is a highly significant regional organization, and we hold it in great esteem,” Araghchi declared, urging member states to “speak with one voice” in defense of sovereign equality and the UN Charter’s prohibition on force.

Drawing attention to the June 13 strike that killed Iranian military officers and scientists, followed by US bombings of three nuclear sites, Araghchi accused both nations of flagrantly violating Article 2(4) of the Charter and the Nuclear Non‑Proliferation Treaty. He formally requested a head‑of‑state resolution to provide Iran with political backing and operational assistance.

In a series of bilateral meetings on the summit’s sidelines, Araghchi and Russia’s Sergey Lavrov condemned the attacks and pledged coordinated UN Security Council action; with India’s Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, he reviewed shared West Asian concerns; and with Pakistan’s Muhammad Ishaq Dar, he affirmed Islamabad’s solidarity. Conversations with Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan further secured pledges to bolster economic cooperation and regional stability.

Proposing new SCO mechanisms—a rapid‑response unit for military aggression, a sanctions‑countering centre, and a Shanghai Regional Security Assembly—Araghchi painted a vision of a multipolar world order rooted in “cooperation, synergy, and mutual trust.” He concluded: “Our future lies in standing resolutely against unilateralism, warmongering, and the subversion of national sovereignty.”
