SAEDNEWS: Responding sharply on X, Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi accused EU High Representative Kaja Kallas of flouting the Nuclear Non‑Proliferation Treaty and undermining both UNSC Resolution 2231 and the JCPOA’s snapback mechanism.

Araghchi Lashes Out at EU Foreign Policy Chief for “Ignoring” NPT and JCPOA Provisions

According to Saed News, Seyed Abbas Araghchi, Iran’s deputy foreign minister and seasoned nuclear negotiator, delivered a blistering rebuttal to European Union High Representative Kaja Kallas’s recent remarks on the Joint Commission of the JCPOA. In a post on the platform X, Araghchi warned that, should the commission’s coordinator truly view “ending Iran’s nuclear programme” as the objective of any future talks, it would entail three grave consequences.

First, he asserted, Ms Kallas would be in direct contravention of the Nuclear Non‑Proliferation Treaty (NPT), which “explicitly affirms the right of all signatories to develop, research, and use nuclear technology for peaceful purposes.” Second, Araghchi declared that the provisions of UN Security Council Resolution 2231 and the JCPOA itself would “no longer hold any validity” for their official coordinator, rendering the so‑called snapback mechanism “baseless.” Finally, he concluded that “the participation and role of the European Union and its member states, plus the UK, in any future negotiation would be irrelevant and therefore meaningless.”

Araghchi’s remarks underscore Tehran’s insistence that any dialogue on its nuclear programme must respect established international law. By challenging the very framework that has governed nuclear diplomacy since 2015, his statement signals a deepening rift between Iran and its European interlocutors—one that could further complicate efforts to resurrect or renegotiate the landmark agreement.
