SAEDNEWS: “Iran must not acquire nuclear weapons — this has been a consistent position of the European Troika and the European Union for many years,” said UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy. “We are committed to continuing dialogue and negotiations with Tehran.”
According to Saed News, British Foreign Secretary David Lammy has expressed the United Kingdom’s strong desire—alongside France, Germany, and the European Union—to resume and continue diplomatic engagement with Iran over its nuclear program and the broader regional crisis unfolding in the Middle East.
Speaking on Friday in Geneva, where he met with Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi alongside his French and German counterparts and the EU's foreign policy chief, Lammy emphasized the urgency of sustained dialogue.
"While Iran insists its nuclear program is entirely peaceful, we reiterate our longstanding position: Iran must not acquire a nuclear weapon," Lammy said. "The E3 and the European Union have consistently stressed this point for years. We remain committed to keeping these channels of communication open with Tehran."
Notably, Lammy called on Tehran to continue diplomatic talks with the United States, even as he refrained from referencing the multiple rounds of nuclear negotiations that preceded Israel’s recent military assault on Iranian territory.
"This is a highly dangerous moment," Lammy said. "It is crucial that we avoid a regional escalation of this conflict."
His comments follow a controversial and unlawful airstrike by Israel in the early hours of June 13, targeting civilian infrastructure in Tehran. The attack, which has triggered retaliatory responses from the Islamic Republic, marks a dangerous new chapter in the ongoing confrontation.
Israel has justified its aggression by claiming Iran’s nuclear program is nearing weaponization. However, both the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the U.S. intelligence community have found no evidence of weaponization in Iran’s current nuclear activities.
Former UK Ambassador to Uzbekistan, Craig Murray, speaking to Russia’s RIA Novosti, underscored Iran’s restraint: “Despite years of provocation by Israel, Iran has acted with remarkable responsibility and patience.”
As tensions escalate, European leaders are attempting to steer the crisis back toward diplomacy—though the path forward remains fraught with uncertainty.
