According to Saed News, Reuters—citing two European diplomatic sources and one Iranian diplomatic source—reported that senior Iranian diplomats and the three European powers will meet on Friday, May 16, in Istanbul, Turkey, to discuss the Islamic Republic of Iran’s nuclear program.

The talks between Iranian diplomats and the European Troika—France, Germany, and the United Kingdom—were initially scheduled for May 2, one day before the fourth round of Iran-U.S. nuclear negotiations. However, following the postponement of the Tehran–Washington talks, the negotiations with the Europeans were also delayed.

The reason for the delay was that France, Germany, and the UK were initially concerned that such talks could create an alternative diplomatic path and consequently sideline the negotiations between Tehran and Washington. Nevertheless, they ultimately decided that maintaining dialogue with Tehran and reaffirming their position on a potential nuclear agreement framework would serve their interests, and thus agreed to proceed with the talks.

The Islamic Republic of Iran is also eager to hold these negotiations in order to keep its options open and assess the stance of the European powers regarding the reinstatement of United Nations Security Council sanctions.

Abbas Araghchi, the Iranian foreign minister, accused the European Troika of “inaction” in the Iran–U.S. nuclear negotiations in an op-ed published Saturday in the French magazine Le Point, and warned that triggering the “snapback” mechanism in the JCPOA and reinstating sanctions would not only end Europe’s role in the nuclear deal with Tehran, but would also escalate tensions irreversibly.
