Saed News: The new leader of the world's Catholics has called for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and the delivery of humanitarian aid to the war-weary people of the region.
According to Saed News, quoting Fars News Agency, Pope Leo XIV, in his first Sunday address to the crowd in St. Peter’s Square, called for the prevention of further wars. The new pope spoke of a just and lasting peace in Ukraine and an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, along with the release of captives and the delivery of humanitarian aid.
Reflecting the views of Pope Francis, he added, “I carry the suffering of the beloved people of Ukraine in my heart and am deeply moved by what is happening in the Gaza Strip. I call on the parties involved to declare a ceasefire, release the hostages (prisoners), and help the hungry people who long for a peaceful future.”
On Thursday, the Vatican’s cardinals elected Robert Francis Prevost as the new Pope of the Roman Catholic Church. The new pope chose the name Leo XIV for himself. He was born in the United States and raised in a family of Italian, French, and Spanish heritage, spending much of his 69 years in Peru. Prevost is known within the Church as a moderate figure whose views are closely aligned with those of Pope Francis.
