SAEDNEWS: The UN spokesperson said that to activate the “snapback” mechanism, which reinstates UN Security Council sanctions against Iran, countries wishing to do so must send a letter to the President of the UN Security Council.
According to Saed News, quoting ISNA, the UN spokesperson said that to activate the “snapback” mechanism, which reinstates UN Security Council sanctions against Iran, countries wishing to do so must send a letter to the President of the UN Security Council.
UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric stated on Wednesday evening in a statement: “For the snapback issue, a letter must be sent to the President of the Security Council—not to the Secretary-General, which I had previously misstated in the briefing.”
According to RIA Novosti, the UN spokesperson added that further information will be provided later.
Earlier, the news outlet Axios reported that European leaders are close to resuming UN Security Council sanctions against Iran.
This report comes as Iran and the European trio—Britain, France, and Germany—held another round of nuclear talks in Geneva on Tuesday.
Esmaeil Baghai, on Tuesday evening after the conclusion of Iran-Europe talks in Geneva, referring to recent European claims regarding the potential use of the UN sanctions snapback mechanism against Iran, emphasized: “The principled position of the Islamic Republic of Iran is clear; none of the three European countries has any legal or lawful right to do so, and if they act, the consequences will fall upon those countries themselves.”
