Beyond Rhetoric: Iran and Belarus Seek Long-Term Partnership in Face of Western Pressure

Masoud Pezeshkian, on Wednesday, August 20, 2025, during the final stage of his visit to Belarus, met with Ms. Natalia Kochanova, Chairwoman of the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of Belarus, Mr. Igor Sergeyenko, Chairman of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of Belarus, and several other lawmakers. Expressing satisfaction with his visit to Belarus and these meetings, he thanked the country for its stance in condemning the attack by the Zionist regime and the United States against the Islamic Republic of Iran.

According to Saed News quoting ISNA, he stated: “Iran has never attacked any country and has never had such an intention.” He added that the Zionist regime, with full U.S. coordination and support, and in violation of all international laws and norms, attacked Iran. While attacks on peaceful nuclear facilities are prohibited even in times of war, Iran’s nuclear facilities were assaulted. He also emphasized that the Zionist regime, which occupied a land 70 years ago and displaced its people, has carried out brutal assaults and, in less than two years alone, has killed more than 60,000 innocent people. Today, it has blocked water, food, and medicine, while the world—claiming to defend human rights—watches silently as women and children die from hunger and lack of medical care.

In another part of his remarks, Pezeshkian said: “The arrogant countries that claim civilization, democracy, freedom, and human rights are spreading nothing but lies.” He also expressed appreciation for the views voiced in the session by the heads and members of the Belarusian Parliament regarding Iran’s peaceful nature.

The President stated: “I believe this trip marks the beginning of a long path between the two countries.” He underlined that parliaments can greatly facilitate and advance governmental objectives, both domestically and internationally. “In our country, we strive to work with parliamentarians through a common language and vision regarding the nation’s major goals,” he added.

Referring to the 2023–2026 roadmap between the two countries, he emphasized Iran’s determination to fully implement and realize all the objectives of this document. He expressed hope that the experiences gained from this roadmap would help draft a comprehensive, long-term strategic cooperation agreement. “With the will and determination of officials in both countries, we can prepare and implement a truly comprehensive program for major developmental and long-term objectives,” he stressed.

Pezeshkian also underscored Iran’s serious determination to pursue bilateral agreements and cooperation in regional and international forums such as the Eurasian Union, BRICS, and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization. He noted: “Iran and Belarus share the belief that unilateralism cannot last, and countries like ours can work within multilateral frameworks to secure mutual interests.”

During this meeting, the Chairwoman of the Council of the Republic of Belarus, Natalia Kochanova, welcomed Pezeshkian’s visit and said: “This trip will open a new chapter in bilateral relations.” She emphasized that Iran and Belarus share many positions and approaches, with independence-seeking, opposition to domination, and pursuit of peace forming the foundations of their foreign policy and international engagement.

Kochanova reiterated her condemnation of the Zionist regime’s aggression against Iran, saying: “We in Belarus have followed the news of the attack on Iran with sorrow and consider the assault on Iran’s peaceful nuclear facilities a violation of all international laws and regulations. The aggressors tried to break Iran, but you have shown that Iran is strong, and they cannot succeed—just as their attempt to bring about a revolution in Belarus also failed.”

She also reaffirmed Belarus’s support for the rights of the oppressed Palestinian people and stressed her country’s position in favor of establishing an independent Palestinian state.

The Chairwoman further expressed satisfaction with the growing parliamentary relations and cooperation between the two countries.

Igor Sergeyenko, Chairman of the House of Representatives of Belarus, also described his country as a good friend and reliable partner of Iran. He stated: “I believe this visit will become a turning point in bilateral relations. In our legislative bodies, relying on existing friendly and constructive ties, we will work to further expand cooperation and help draft a comprehensive roadmap for long-term collaboration.”
