Tehran: Snapback Activation Could Trigger NPT Exit and National Consensus Response

In an interview, Malek Shariati reacted to threats from some European countries to activate the snapback mechanism and reinstate UN Security Council resolutions, emphasizing: “We are fully prepared in facing the opposing side.”

According to Saed News citing Mehr News Agency, he noted: “Following the great sacrifice of the Iranian people and the failure of aggressors against Iran—with divine guidance, leadership strategies, national unity, and the dedication of our armed forces—the Iranian nation is well-prepared.”

The Tehran representative in the Islamic Consultative Assembly added that the parliament has several options on the table, the most important of which is withdrawal from the JCPOA. He explained: “Exiting the JCPOA would legally nullify any such processes.”

He continued: “In fact, if Western countries attempt to activate the snapback mechanism, they will receive a heavy and decisive response from us before any process is completed.”

Shariati further stated: “From a legal standpoint, we are also considering withdrawal from the NPT. This has been officially communicated in writing to the International Atomic Energy Agency under both the Rouhani and the late Raisi administrations. If the snapback mechanism is activated, we will leave the NPT.”

The Tehran lawmaker emphasized that Iran has both preventive and reactive measures in place against snapback activation. “Even Western countries know that the snapback no longer exists. After military attacks on Iran and the failure to lift sanctions, threats related to the snapback are effectively hollow,” he said.

Regarding the European threats, Shariati explained: “European countries are trying to hold this ‘club’ over the Iranian nation’s head, but they will undoubtedly face our heavy response and national consensus. We advise Europe not to pursue this path, as initiating the snapback will be the final nail in the coffin of negotiations.”
