China Rejects New Sanctions on Iran, Opposes European Threat of UN ‘Snapback’

China’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson on Friday formally declared opposition to the imposition of new sanctions on Iran over its nuclear program—a move that provides Tehran with significant diplomatic support as European powers approach a looming deadline.

According to Saed News citing ISNA, the Chinese statement directly contradicts warnings by Britain, France, and Germany that they would reinstate United Nations sanctions if no diplomatic solution to the nuclear deadlock is reached by the end of August.

As reported by Chinese state media, Lin Jian, spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, stated in an official press release that Beijing is “opposed” to imposing sanctions. He further explained that China “believes such measures do not help the parties build trust or resolve differences, and are not beneficial to diplomatic efforts aimed at the early resumption of negotiations.”

Meanwhile, Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi recently asserted that the European countries lack any legal authority to activate the “snapback mechanism” in order to reimpose UN sanctions.
