Song Il Gook is the son of former politician and actor, Kim Ae-yeol Dong. His paternal grandfather, Kim Kwa Chin, was a famous anarchist and general in the Korean independence movement at the beginning of the 19th century. Song Il Gook was born as the first child in Seoul, South Korea, and two years later, his sister, Song Song Yi, was born.

At 33 years old, in 2004, he made his 11th acting appearance in the series "Emperor of the Sea" as the character Yom. However, his fame skyrocketed in 2006 with the series "Jumong" in the lead role. In 2008, two years after the global broadcast of this series, Iran’s National TV obtained the broadcasting rights, and it aired on Channel 3. The popularity of this series was so immense that no foreign or Iranian films or series have reached the same level of popularity to date.
