Global Alarm Over Gaza Catastrophe, As US Defends Israel At UNSC

While the world raises the alarm over the dire humanitarian conditions caused by Israel in the Gaza Strip, the United States continues to dismiss Israeli war crimes and reaffirm its unwavering support for the occupying regime—this time at the UN Security Council.

Addressing a Security Council meeting on Tuesday, world diplomats and UN officials urged an end to Israeli restrictions that have brought the besieged territory to the brink of famine.

UN deputy spokesperson Farhan Haq warned that “massive food shortages continue to impact people’s chances for survival,” with malnutrition rising and children’s immune systems deteriorating.

He stressed that “an urgent scale-up of supplies” and safe humanitarian access were essential, saying that while aid organizations managed to deliver over 270,000 hot meals across Gaza last Thursday, the figure remains far below what is needed for over two million people.

Slovenia’s UN Ambassador Samuel Zbogar emphasized that addressing the suffering of Israeli captives should not overshadow the plight of Palestinian civilians.

Deliberate starvation “is unlawful and morally unacceptable—wherever it happens, and whoever perpetrates it,” he said, calling on Israel to allow immediate and unhindered aid access.

In stark contrast, US Ambassador Dorothy Shea pushed back against mounting criticism of Israel, saying: “We have once again heard members here make allegations of genocide. These accusations are politically motivated and categorically false. They are part of a deliberate, cynical propaganda campaign.”

She blamed Hamas for the civilian suffering and reiterated that the United States “fully supports Israel’s right to defend itself.”

Shea also claimed that the humanitarian crisis could end if Hamas surrenders and releases the captives, echoing statements made by US President Donald Trump.

The meeting underscored the growing divide between the global consensus demanding accountability for Israel’s war on Gaza and Washington’s diplomatic cover for its closest ally, even amid mounting evidence of war crimes and civilian suffering.

It came as Israel’s ongoing genocidal war on the strip, which began in October 2023, has so far claimed the lives of more than 61,000 Palestinians, mostly women and children.
