Iranian MPs Praise Domestic Satellite Launch

Iranian lawmakers have hailed the successful launch of the country’s first homegrown telecommunications satellite, Nahid-2.

In a joint statement, 170 members of Parliament termed the satellite as a symbol of Iran’s progress in science and technology.

Iran’s Nahid-2 communication satellite, an upgraded version of Nahid-1 and developed by the Iranian Space Research Institute and the Iranian Space Agency (I.S.A.), was launched aboard a Soyuz rocket from Russia’s Vostochny Cosmodrome on Friday.

The nearly 110-kilogram low Earth orbit (L.E.O.) microsatellite, built with the cooperation of Iranian knowledge-based companies, is designed to operate at an altitude of 500 kilometers and represents a major step in Iran's development of L.E.O. communications satellite constellations and future high Earth orbit (GEO) telecommunications systems.

Hours into its launch, the Iranian Space Agency announced that it has received the first telemetry data from the Nahid-2 satellite, which data confirms that the satellite is intact and functioning properly.
