Iran warns of ‘Collapse of Global Legal Order’ after U.N. Resignations Over Palestine

Tehran has warned that the recent wave of resignations at a United Nations inquiry on Palestine signals a broader collapse of the global legal and moral order, driven by Western pressure and double standards.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei, in a post on his X account on Thursday, said the mass resignation of members of the U.N. Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territories, following U.S. sanctions against the U.N. Special Rapporteur on Palestine, must be seen as “an alarming sign of the erosion of the global legal and normative order.”

He warned that international institutions are “giving up their legitimacy, effectiveness, authority and sense of mission” under “militant bullying and radical unilateralism.”

“The world normative order collapsed not by war,” Baqaei wrote, “but because of silence, indifference and double-standard in the face of grave injustices.”

On Monday, three members of the U.N. Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territories resigned, amid heightened tensions after the U.S. sanctioned Francesca Albanese, the U.N. special rapporteur on human rights in the Palestinian territories.

The commission was established to examine the violations of international law in the occupied Palestinian territories, including the Gaza Strip and the West Bank.

Israel launched a genocidal war on Gaza on October 7, 2023, after Palestinian resistance fighters carried out a surprise military operation against the occupying regime over its intensified violence against Palestinians in the West Bank.

The Israeli army has killed more than 58,000 people, mostly women and children, in the besieged territory since the beginning of the war.
