Military Strikes On Iran’s Nuclear Facilities a Breach of U.N. Conventions: Russia

Vladimir Tarabrin, Russia’s Permanent Representative to the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (O.P.C.W.), has condemned U.S.-Israeli military strikes on Iran’s peaceful nuclear facilities, calling them a grave violation of international law, including United Nations conventions.

Speaking at the 67th session of the O.P.C.W. Executive Council, Tarabrin—who also serves as Russia’s ambassador to the Netherlands—strongly denounced the attacks on Iranian nuclear sites that are under the safeguards of the International Atomic Energy Agency (I.A.E.A.). He emphasized that such actions blatantly breach established international legal frameworks.

Tarabrin urged a thorough assessment of possible contamination resulting from the strikes and called for urgent measures to address any fallout.

The Russian envoy further warned that Israel’s attacks on Iran’s nuclear infrastructure threaten global non-proliferation efforts and undermine the integrity of the I.A.E.A. safeguards.

Israel launched the aggression on June 13, just days before planned diplomatic talks between Iran and the United States regarding Tehran’s peaceful nuclear program. Iran’s nuclear facilities were among the places that were hit.

The United States joined the war on behalf of Israel on June 22, conducting airstrikes on three Iranian nuclear sites in Fordow, Isfahan, and Natanz.

In response, Iran’s Armed Forces launched retaliatory strikes on key positions in Israeli-occupied territories, inflicting significant damage. A ceasefire was declared on June 24.
