Grossi: The Nuclear Non-Proliferation Regime Is on the Verge of Collapse / Diplomacy Is the Only Way Out!

According to Saednews, Rafael Grossi, in remarks published on the IAEA website, said: Today, amid a serious conflict involving three IAEA member states, Iranian nuclear sites have been attacked. This crisis has brought the global nuclear non-proliferation regime to the brink of collapse.

He added that diplomacy still remains the way forward; otherwise, the global non-proliferation system, which has guaranteed international security for over half a century, may collapse.

The IAEA Director General stated that steps must be taken to achieve peace, starting with returning to the negotiating table and allowing IAEA inspectors, as guardians of the NPT, to return to Iran’s nuclear sites.

Grossi explained the consequences of the attacks on Iran’s nuclear facilities, saying the situation is being closely monitored, and the Iranian supervisory body has been asked to maintain contact with the IAEA’s Incident and Emergency Centre.

He noted that IAEA inspectors remain in Iran and are ready to carry out their duties, thanking Iranian authorities for their cooperation, as well as the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, the UN Safety and Security Department, and the UN’s designated security official.

Referring to previous General Conference resolutions, Grossi emphasized that armed attacks on nuclear facilities must never occur and called for maximum restraint, warning that military escalation endangers lives and delays diplomacy.

He concluded by stating he is ready to travel to Iran immediately and stressed the importance of continuing cooperation despite differences, expressing willingness to engage all relevant parties to ensure the protection of nuclear facilities and the peaceful use of nuclear technology in line with the IAEA’s mission.

The extraordinary IAEA Board of Governors meeting was convened Monday morning following the US’s aggressive action against Iran’s nuclear sites. Iran expects the Board members to strongly condemn the attacks by Israel and the US, stating that the attackers will bear full responsibility for all consequences.
