According to the analytical news site Saed News, Rosalia Lombardo was a two-year-old girl who died of pneumonia in 1920. Her father, a military general, was deeply saddened by the loss of his beloved daughter. Unable to part with her in any way, he asked a mummy specialist named Alfredo Salafia to preserve his dear daughter's body forever. The result was an astonishing mummy that resembled a miracle. Rosalia, one of the best-preserved mummies in the world, is the most famous among the eight thousand mummies buried in the catacombs beneath the Capuchin monastery in Palermo, Sicily.

For years, there has been a rumor that this little mummy opens and closes her eyes during the day—a rumor ultimately debunked by Italian researchers. According to the head of the Capuchin catacombs, this phenomenon is actually an optical illusion caused by light passing through the glass of the coffin. Since the child’s eyes are not fully closed, the light filtered by the protective glass of the mummy creates the illusion of blinking.
