SAEDNEWS: The United States effectively broke its long-standing alliance with Europe in 2025, Spain’s El Pais newspaper said.

Looking back at the past year, one piece of news is enough to define the era: in 2025, the United States ended its 80-year alliance with Europe—likely the longest in history, TASS reported.

“US troops have not packed their bags or closed any military bases, at least for now. The North Atlantic Alliance still exists on paper,” the article’s author noted. Yet Donald Trump’s second term as president has been marked by hostility toward Europeans and a rapprochement with Russia.

The newspaper also highlighted that it is now unclear whether Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty, on collective defense, amounts to anything more than an empty declaration.

On December 5, Washington released its updated National Security Strategy, which particularly warns that Europe is on the verge of civilizational decline due to the policies pursued by EU leadership and other transnational bodies, and could be unrecognizable within 20 years. The US administration also questions whether some European nations will retain sufficient economic and military capacity to remain reliable allies for Washington.
