Most of those killed were police officers and forensic team members examining explosives stored at the police station, according to the report.

The death toll could rise further, as five of the injured remain in critical condition, NDTV reported.

Reuters could not immediately verify the cause of the blast. Jammu and Kashmir police did not respond immediately to requests for comment.

Earlier, a local police official told Reuters that an explosion had struck Nowgam police station. The official said the fire had engulfed the compound, and fire tenders were rushed to the scene amid fears of casualties.

The blast occurred just four days after a deadly car explosion in Delhi that killed at least eight people, in what Indian authorities have described as a terror attack.
