SAEDNEWS: While Tehran Water CEO Warns of a 100-Day Supply, High-Consumption Northern Residents Hold the Key to the Crisis
According to Saed News’ political service, citing Fars News Agency, Mohsen Ardakani, CEO of Tehran Province Water and Wastewater Company, stated in a TV program today that the standard water consumption in Tehran is defined as 130 liters per person per day.
Previously, in 2020, Mohammad Reza Bakhtiari, former CEO of Tehran’s Water and Wastewater Company, reported that about 47% of the capital’s drinking water is consumed only in Districts 1 to 3.
Official statistics show that Tehran’s daily water consumption is around 3 billion liters, while the population of these three northern districts is approximately 1.638 million people—about 18.8% of the city’s total population.
Experts note that if residents of these districts adjust their water consumption to the standard 130 liters per person per day, around 1.2 billion liters of water could be saved daily. As a result, total water consumption in Tehran would drop from 3 billion liters to about 1.8 billion liters per day.
This calculation indicates that by reducing consumption only in the northern districts, the capital’s water reserves could increase from 100 days to 167 days—adding 67 more days to secure the city’s water supply, simply by enforcing equitable usage among the high-consuming minority.
Earlier in November, Mohsen Ardakani had warned that Tehran only has 100 days of water reserves remaining, and if current consumption patterns continue, a serious drinking water crisis could become inevitable.
Experts emphasize that managing water consumption in northern districts is not only crucial during the current crisis but also represents a fundamental step toward achieving water justice and sustainable resource management for the capital.
