SAEDNEWS: Syrian news agency (SANA) reported that Abu Mohammad al-Jolani, the leader of the terrorist group Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham in Syria, met and held talks with US President Donald Trump in New York.
According to Saednews, Photographs from the meeting, published by SANA news agency, show former U.S. President Donald Trump and Abu Mohammad al-Jolani, leader of the Syrian militant group Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham, meeting on the sidelines of a ceremony hosted by the American president.
Only a year ago, al-Jolani’s presence in the United States would have been unthinkable. The U.S. had placed a $10 million reward on his capture due to his leadership role in Jabhat al-Nusra—later reorganized as Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham—and his connections to al-Qaeda. Any attempt by al-Jolani to travel to New York at that time would have carried a high risk of arrest.
Today, however, Jolani is reportedly attending sessions of the United Nations General Assembly in New York. The apparent shift in his status has sparked widespread reactions on social media. On the platform X (formerly Twitter), users expressed astonishment, describing al-Jolani’s journey from being a wanted militant to attending the UN podium as a striking paradox and a significant contradiction in international policy.
Observers say the situation highlights the complex realities of global diplomacy and the often-controversial interactions between state actors and individuals with histories of terrorism-related activity.
