Iran’s Foreign Minister Flies to Qatar for Urgent OIC Summit

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi departed for Doha on Sunday morning to attend an emergency meeting of foreign ministers of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), convened at Qatar’s request to address the recent Israeli military aggression in the country.

The meeting aims to coordinate a response to the attack and lay the groundwork for the Islamic-Arab summit scheduled for Monday, where leaders from across the region will deliberate on the escalating crisis. Iran will be represented by President Masoud Pezeshkian, who previously visited Doha on October 3 for bilateral talks and participation in the Asia Cooperation Dialogue Forum.

The emergency session follows a deadly strike by the Israeli regime on a residential compound in Doha targeting Hamas leadership. While senior Hamas officials survived, five Hamas members and a Qatari security officer were killed. The targeted meeting was focused on a new US-proposed deal to end the Gaza conflict, which has claimed over 64,800 lives since October 2023.

Qatar, alongside the US and Egypt, has been actively mediating negotiations to halt the violence. The OIC meeting in Doha underscores the urgent need for regional cooperation to address the humanitarian and political fallout from the ongoing conflict.
