SAEDNEWS: Rafael Grossi, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), has forsaken the agency's technical mandate, ostensibly for impartial oversight, to pursue a politicized agenda influenced by the US and Israel.
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), established to promote the peaceful use of nuclear energy and prevent weapons proliferation, is facing severe criticism over its handling of Iran’s nuclear program under Director General Rafael Grossi. Critics argue that Grossi has strayed from the agency’s impartial mandate, turning it into a political tool for Western powers, particularly the United States and Israel.
Rather than serving as a neutral technical body, Grossi is accused of weaponizing IAEA oversight to cast Iran’s peaceful nuclear program in a cloud of suspicion. Reports highlight a pattern of unprofessionalism, double standards, and reliance on unverified intelligence from Israel—a nation not party to the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) yet possessing a clandestine nuclear arsenal. Meanwhile, Iran’s transparent cooperation and technical explanations have been dismissed.
A key concern is Grossi’s repeated public disclosure of sensitive information, bypassing diplomatic channels and amplifying baseless allegations in international media. This “media-centric strategy” has fueled suspicion and provided justification for economic sanctions, which have had severe humanitarian impacts on ordinary Iranians, depriving them of medicine and essential technology.
The Head of Iran’s Atomic Energy Organization, Mohammad Eslami, condemned Grossi’s approach, stating, “Grossi’s destructive role regarding Iran will be recorded in history.” Documents allegedly reveal close coordination between Grossi and Israeli authorities, suggesting the IAEA chief’s actions helped create the pretext for Israel’s military strikes on June 13, 2025, which targeted nuclear and civilian infrastructure and caused widespread casualties.
Grossi’s handling of Iran’s “safeguards issues,” reliance on unverified intelligence, selective outrage over regional nuclear threats, and consistent delays in resolving disputes reveal a politically motivated double standard. While Iran’s program faces intense scrutiny, Israel’s nuclear activities remain unexamined.
Critics argue that under Grossi, the IAEA has abandoned its core mission: promoting peaceful nuclear energy and ensuring compliance with the NPT. Instead, it has become a vehicle for geopolitical pressure, undermining diplomatic efforts and exposing Iran to both economic warfare and military aggression.
Eslami concluded that Grossi’s tenure represents a dark chapter in the history of the IAEA, one that damages the agency’s credibility and compromises the future of nuclear verification. Until the IAEA returns to impartiality, critics warn, it remains a central part of the problem rather than a solution in global nuclear diplomacy.
