SAEDNEWS: Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has criticized Europe and the West for double standards in Ukraine and Gaza, calling the EU’s response a failure and urging consistent moral leadership to strengthen credibility on global crises.
According to Saed News, Spain’s Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, has warned that Europe and the West’s double standards over the wars in Ukraine and Gaza could severely damage their global credibility. He described Israel’s assault on Gaza as “one of the darkest episodes of international relations in the 21st century.”
In an interview with the Guardian ahead of talks with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer in London, Sánchez also criticized the US under Donald Trump for attempting to dismantle the post-World War II rules-based international order.
Sánchez defended migration policies, attributing climate inaction to traditional rightwing parties that mimic populist rivals, and highlighted Spain’s pioneering recognition of a Palestinian state. However, he admitted that Europe’s overall response had been poor, calling it “a failure” and stressing the need for the EU to act consistently to preserve credibility in crises such as Ukraine.
“The roots of these wars are different, but the world is asking: why the double standards between Ukraine and Gaza?” he said. Sánchez is pushing Europe to increase pressure on Israel, including financial sanctions, and praised Spain’s vocal stance within the EU and international community.
On relations with the US, Sánchez emphasized a pragmatic approach, highlighting Spain’s loyalty to NATO and the transatlantic bond while noting disagreements over issues like the Paris Agreement and foreign aid cuts. He warned that the US weakening the international order creates an opportunity for the EU and UK to assert greater influence.
Sánchez also stressed the importance of moral and practical policies on climate and migration, criticizing traditional rightwing parties that downplay the climate emergency. He emphasized migration as both a moral duty and an economic opportunity for Europe.
Regarding domestic politics, Sánchez defended his administration against corruption allegations, insisting that his minority government remains committed to economic and social progress while criticizing opposition parties for copying far-right policies.
