Brazil Rejects New Israeli Envoy Amid Escalating Diplomatic Row Over Gaza Genocide

Tensions between Brazil and Israel escalate further as the South American nation has refused to approve the appointment of a new Israeli ambassador to Brasilia.

Brazilian media reported on Monday that the government did not intend to approve Gali Dagan, who was appointed by the Israeli regime to replace Daniel Zohar Zonshine, the current ambassador to Brazil, who resigned last week.

The Israeli Foreign Ministry also confirmed in a statement that Brazilian authorities had rejected the accreditation of Dagan as new envoy to the country.

However, the decision deepened the diplomatic crisis as hours later, the Tel Aviv regime announced downgrading relations with Brazil and declaring President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva “persona non grata.”

Relations between the two sides deteriorated since February 2024 after da Silva accused Israel of committing genocide in Gaza, and compared the regime’s actions to Adolf Hitler and the Nazis during World War II.

“It’s not a war of soldiers against soldiers. It’s a war between a highly prepared army and women and children. What’s happening in the Gaza Strip with the Palestinian people hasn’t happened at any other moment in history. Actually, it has happened: when Hitler decided to kill the Jews,” he then said.

Last month, Brazil’s decision to withdraw from the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance as well as the announcement to join South Africa’s lawsuit against Israeli genocide at the International Court of Justice in The Hague angered the regime further.

Brazil’s ambassador has also not returned to Tel Aviv since February of last year, after being recalled for consultations by the government.
