Iraq Acts Independently and Based on National Interests, Top Security Official Tells US Envoy

Iraq's National Security Advisor Qasim al-Araji says his country follows its national interests in its policies and acts as an independent, sovereign state.

Al-Araji made the remarks in a meeting with US Chargé d'Affaires Steven Fagin in Baghdad on Saturday, briefing him on the security pact Iran and Iraq signed last week.

The Iraqi official said that the agreement is aimed at strengthening border control, enhancing regional security and stability, and preventing smuggling and cross-border infiltration.

Iraq’s policies are guided by “its supreme national interests,” and the country acts as a sovereign, independent state, Al-Araji said, adding that the Iraqi government maintains balanced relations with countries in the region and the world, pursuing a policy of diplomatic openness toward friendly and neighboring nations.

Meanwhile, Fagin, reiterated Washington’s support for the Iraqi government’s balanced domestic and foreign policies and praised efforts regarding the return and rehabilitation of displaced persons.

The Iran-Iran security agreement was signed by al-Araji and Ali Larijani, the secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council during the Iranian official’s visit to the Arab country on August 11.

At a press conference following the signing of the pact in Baghdad, Larijani said that the deal paves the way for lasting security for both countries.
