Iran Says Neither Simplifies Nor Underestimates South Caucasus Developments

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei says the Islamic Republic of Iran is closely monitoring developments in the South Caucasus region, neither oversimplifying nor underestimating any issue.

“The South Caucasus region is of significant political, economic, and geopolitical importance for us and for regional countries, especially Russia... We are closely monitoring developments with open eyes, and we neither oversimplify nor downplay any issue,” Baqaei said on Sunday in an interview with a local radio channel.

He emphasized the need to avoid misinterpretations and misinformation, which he said could aim to disrupt Iran’s relations with South Caucasus states.

The spokesperson also reiterated Iran’s stance that considers foreign interference a red line. He said Iran views the presence of extra-regional forces as detrimental to regional stability and a source of geopolitical complications.

Armenian authorities have announced to Iran that a rail corridor reconstruction would be undertaken by Armenian firms and a US company registered under Armenian law, he further said in reference to an article of a US-brokered peace deal signed by Armenia and Azerbaijan to end their territorial dispute on August 8.

No foreign forces would be deployed along the borders, the spokesperson noted, adding that Iran is sensitive to this issue, and Armenia is aware of the consequences of any foreign military presence.

Baqaei emphasized the importance of the South Caucasus for Iran, saying that the Islamic Republic has good relations with countries in that region. “The stability and security of this region are important for us,” he said.
