SAEDNEWS: Pakistan's Foreign Minister stated that the country firmly backs Iran's request for an “extraordinary meeting” of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation following the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran.
According to SAEDNEWS, Ismail Haniyeh and one of his bodyguards were martyred when their residence in Tehran was attacked on Wednesday, as confirmed by a statement from the IRGC.
This incident occurred just hours after Israel conducted a strike in Beirut, targeting and killing top Hezbollah commander Fuad Shukr, raising concerns about an escalating regional conflict in the wake of the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict in Gaza.
In a telephone call with Ishaq Dar today, Iran's Acting Foreign Minister, Ali Bagehri Kani, expressed his country's profound sorrow over the assassination of Ismail Haniyeh, as reported by Dawn.
FM Dar conveyed that Pakistan shares Iran's sentiments and emphasized that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif strongly condemned the recent events in Gaza, along with the brutal assassination of Ismail Haniyeh.
Additionally, the National Assembly of Pakistan unanimously condemned the killing, stating that it violates "international law, established diplomatic norms, and acceptable behavior among nations."
Kani urged Dar to attend an "extraordinary meeting" of the OIC, to be convened at the "foreign ministers level" on this issue.
Iran has requested this meeting, which is likely to take place soon, according to the Foreign Office.
Dar expressed full support for the call for an extraordinary meeting and confirmed Pakistan’s commitment to "actively participate" in this "important gathering."
