SAEDNEWS: Algeria intends to join BRICS and bring ties with the association's countries to a new level, Chairwoman of the People's Assembly of the Algiers Province Najiba Djilali said at the sixth International Municipal BRICS Forum.
According to SAEDNEWS, Algeria is making strides to become a member of BRICS, an association of emerging economies, as expressed by Najiba Djilali, Chairwoman of the People's Assembly of the Algiers Province. Speaking at the sixth International Municipal BRICS Forum in Moscow, Djilali highlighted Algeria's ambition to elevate its ties with BRICS countries, stating, "We want our country to join BRICS."
This potential membership, according to Djilali, will significantly bolster Algeria's relationships with key global partners, including Russia. "It will be a great joy for us if BRICS provides such an opportunity to improve relations between our countries," she concluded, signaling Algeria's eagerness to tap into the benefits of BRICS alongside its current partnerships.
The sixth International Municipal BRICS Forum is taking place at Moscow's Expocenter from August 27-28, 2024, and is expected to draw delegations from 126 countries, with representatives from 89 Russian regions participating as well. The forum will gather over 5,000 participants from around 500 cities to discuss pressing issues related to the economy, digital technologies, ecology, urban infrastructure, transportation, healthcare, education, and culture.
BRICS has recently expanded its membership, officially adding five developing nations in 2024: Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Iran, Egypt, and Ethiopia. This expansion marks a pivotal moment for the bloc, which has been actively pursuing initiatives such as de-dollarization and advancing its multipolar goals on the global stage.
As Algeria seeks to join the ranks of this influential group, the implications of its membership could resonate throughout the region and beyond, potentially reshaping the geopolitical landscape in favor of multipolarity and enhanced collaboration among emerging economies. The outcome of Algeria's aspirations to join BRICS may set the stage for a new chapter in its international relations and economic development.
