This castle comprises two interconnected sections—an upper and a lower fortress—designed as a monumental complex. Its quadruple walls were built in harmony with the contours and conditions of the surrounding rocks, resulting in walls of varying widths in different sections.

Surrounded by steep cliffs on all four sides, the fortress has a single entrance located at the northeastern end. It is famously associated with Hasan Sabbah, the Ismaili propagandist of the Seljuk era in 428 AH.

Historians debate the exact date of its construction, but it is undoubtedly rooted in the early Islamic period. In 654 AH, the castle was captured by Hulagu Khan. The fortress’s prominence declined after its valuable library was looted and burned, ultimately transforming it into a prison.
