Saad News: The Skopje Zoo, home to a 62-year-old chimpanzee named Mimi and hundreds of other animals, is a popular destination for visitors of all ages, especially children, in the capital of North Macedonia.
According to Saad News, Mimi, born in 1962, began her life in a circus. However, due to health concerns, she was no longer able to perform and was sold to a woman in Germany. Eventually, Mimi was donated to a rehabilitation center in the Netherlands designed for chimpanzees rescued from poor circus environments. There, she underwent medical exams and was diagnosed with heart and lung problems.
Alexandra Stikovska, a zookeeper, said that Mimi requires daily treatment. Mimi is ill. She has heart and lung issues and will need continuous care for the rest of her life.
She added: "Five and a half years ago, Mimi was brought to Skopje, where she now lives with male chimpanzees, Izzy (39 years old) and Koko (29 years old)."
Each animal in the Skopje Zoo follows a specialized feeding program, which is especially important for Mimi due to her age and health concerns. Zookeepers use enriched food to stimulate the chimpanzees' motor skills and help them remain active and mentally engaged.
Mimi has formed a close bond with the zookeepers and often shows them affection.
