SAEDNEWS: The truth is, keeping a plant alive in a small pot for years is unnatural, and it may dry out for various reasons. In the following, SaedNews will share tips to prevent your plants from drying out. Stay with us.
If you’re among those who love plants and keep a few at home, you may have returned from a trip only to find them wilted or damaged. One of the biggest concerns for plant owners is how to prevent their plants from drying out while traveling. While watering plants during a trip might seem challenging, there are several simple, low-cost tricks that can ensure your plants stay hydrated even when you’re away. Keep reading to discover these practical tips.
Before learning about different watering methods for travel, it’s important to water your plants thoroughly before leaving. Then, choose one of the following methods. Each technique can maintain plant hydration for 2–3 weeks, so be sure to consider the length of your trip.
Another factor that can harm your plants—often overlooked—is moving them. If you’re traveling for a short time, avoid relocating your plants, as movement can shock them and lead to damage. Once you’ve addressed these concerns, it’s time to select a watering method.

Using a water bottle is one of the easiest ways to keep plants hydrated. There are two approaches:
Upside-down bottle: Fill a bottle with water, loosen the cap slightly, and insert it upside down into the soil. This method works well for small pots.
Perforated bottle: Fill a bottle with water, make a few small holes around the bottom and sides, and place it upright in the soil.
This method works best for plants that can tolerate low light. First, check that your pot has drainage holes. Then, fill a bathtub or shallow tray with water and cover the bottom with several towels so they absorb water gradually. Place the pots on the towels, allowing them to soak water over time. This technique can keep plants hydrated for up to a week.
Ideal for watering multiple plants simultaneously, this method can provide hydration for up to 3 days. Highly water-sensitive plants may not thrive with this approach. Choose cotton or yarn strings for each plant. Place one end of the string in a container of water and the other end in the soil. To ensure proper placement, wrap the string around a pencil and insert it into the soil.
For this method, you only need a plastic sheet and a few sticks. Pay attention to sunlight, as too much heat can damage plants. Insert four sticks into the corners of the pot to serve as a frame. Water the plant normally, then drape the plastic over the frame, ensuring it doesn’t press too tightly on the leaves. Secure the plastic around the pot to prevent it from moving. As water evaporates from the soil, it condenses on the plastic and returns to the plant, keeping it hydrated continuously.

If you return from a trip to find your plants drooping, don’t worry. With a few days of proper watering and care, they can recover, bringing freshness and greenery back to your home. All the watering methods described above are practical and effective, allowing you to travel without worrying about your beloved plants.
