Moderation and Pragmatism? Larijani’s New Role as Security Council Secretary Sparks Debate

According to Saed News, Mahmoud Vaezi, referencing the appointment of Ali Larijani as Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council, wrote on the social platform X:

"Dr. Ali Larijani's non-partisan spirit, developmental managerial style, and moderate approach will serve as a source of positive transformation in the decision-making processes of the SNSC Secretariat."

He added:

"This change is a sign of strengthening the discourse of moderation and rationality. If this move is intended as a shift in approach and a signal to the public, I consider it constructive."

On the previous day, the President issued a decree appointing Ali Larijani as Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council.

In this decree, President Masoud Pezeshkian tasked the new Secretary with overseeing the effective and meticulous implementation of the Secretariat’s affairs and promoting synergy among related agencies. He also instructed Larijani to monitor and prioritize national security issues and emerging threats—especially technological and novel risks—redefine strategic concepts, and adopt an intelligent, people-centered approach aligned with national security priorities. These directives are to be pursued in accordance with the overarching policies and guidance of the Supreme Leader, with the goal of achieving sustainable security at national, regional, and international levels.
