France Explains Timeline for Potential Return of Iran Sanctions Following European Trigger

France’s Foreign Minister, Jean-Noël Barrot, explained the potential timeline for the reinstatement of sanctions against Iran following the European Troika’s request.

According to Saed News, Barrot stated that sanctions against Iran would become active after a 30-day period.

Earlier today, Thursday, 6 Shahrivar (18 August), the three European countries—Germany, France, and the United Kingdom—sent a letter to the UN Security Council President requesting the activation of the so-called “snapback mechanism,” which could lead to the reinstatement of international sanctions on Iran.

The final paragraph of the European letter outlines the procedure to activate the snapback mechanism. It states:
"We remind that if the Security Council does not adopt a resolution within 30 days to continue the suspension of Iran-related resolutions, six Security Council resolutions, including sanctions resolutions, will be reinstated."

According to this explanation, the Security Council is expected to vote in the coming days on a resolution concerning the continuation of the suspension of Iran sanctions.
