Azerbaijan’s Aliyev: Zangazur Corridor Poses No Threat to Iran, Promotes Regional Cooperation

Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev, in an interview with Al Arabiya, emphasized that “the Zangazur Corridor does not pose any threat to Iran and, on the contrary, can contribute to the development of regional cooperation.”

According to Saed News, he added: “Relations between Iran and Azerbaijan are defined at the level of governments, presidents, and foreign ministers, and we do not pay attention to misleading narratives. Our position is clear and logical; under no circumstances does the Zangazur Corridor threaten Iran.”

Aliyev also highlighted the dual role of the corridor: “Zangazur will not only serve as an east–west passage but can also act as a north–south route. In addition to a route from Russia to Iran via Azerbaijan, another route will connect Russia to Azerbaijan, Armenia, Nakhchivan, and then Iran. This benefits the entire region and is a win-win situation with no losers.”

Earlier, the Turkish President, during his return from Azerbaijan, called on Iran to support the establishment of the Zangazur Corridor in Armenian territory. Azerbaijani news agency APA reported that Recep Tayyip Erdoğan stated: “We now want to witness peace and stability in the South Caucasus. We expect Iran to support initiatives serving regional peace.”

Erdoğan added that permanent peace in the region benefits all and emphasized Turkey’s careful normalization process with Armenia.

In this context, Iran’s Foreign Minister previously declared that Iran welcomes any peace between Armenia and Azerbaijan and has expressed readiness to cooperate and assist in the peace process.

Seyed Abbas Araqchi stated that Iran’s position is clear regarding regional matters: it seeks to preserve the full sovereignty of all regional countries and defend their territorial integrity. Iran opposes any change in international borders. The joint statement between Armenia and Azerbaijan aligns with these three principles: respect for sovereignty, territorial integrity, and rejection of border changes.

He emphasized that the corridor issue has been completely set aside, and the discussion now concerns a transit road under Armenian jurisdiction. The project will be implemented by a U.S.-Armenian company registered in Armenia and operating under Armenian law. The Foreign Ministry statement also noted that any foreign presence in the region could negatively impact peace and stability.
