Tehran Monitors Extra-Regional Involvement in South Caucasus Connectivity Projects

According to Saed News, citing IRNA, the spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs commented on developments in the South Caucasus following the Armenia-Azerbaijan agreement: “We announced our position very quickly and are sensitive to the presence and intervention of extra-regional actors in the South Caucasus. We immediately conveyed this matter to our friends in the Republic of Armenia, heard their explanations, and were assured that the partnership they plan to have with American companies will be structured as a company registered in Armenia and will operate according to Armenian law.”

Baqaei also noted that the statement signed between the two countries emphasizes the preservation of national sovereignty, territorial integrity, and the inviolability of borders. He added: “For us, the key point is that unblocking and creating transportation routes—including the railway expected to pass through southern Armenia connecting Azerbaijan to the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic—must in no way affect internationally recognized borders, contradict Armenia’s national sovereignty, or alter the regional geopolitical situation. Therefore, we are closely monitoring the situation and will communicate our concerns to regional countries whenever necessary. We maintain constant vigilance to ensure that the intervention or presence of extra-regional parties does not undermine peace, stability, or security in the South Caucasus.”
