What is Khos Doozi?

Handicrafts of Hormozgan, including Khos Doozi, are primarily locally consumed crafts. Khos Doozi is a type of hand-embroidery in this region, where narrow bands of khos (or naqdeh) are sewn onto fine mesh or woven fabric, and it often features geometric, curved, dot, paisley, and brick-like patterns. This delicate art requires a great deal of patience and was historically done using silver or gold threads instead of modern threads.

History of Khos Doozi: The exact history of this beautiful art is not entirely clear, but what is known is that during the Safavid era, it flourished in Bandar Abbas and Baluchestan. After the Safavid period, significant steps were taken to advance this embroidery, and the art evolved into its most beautiful form. It is also believed that this art originated in India, and its introduction to Southern Iran was likely a result of the close relations between these cities and India, along with other countries.

Application of Khos Doozi: Khos Doozi is primarily done on black mesh fabric, which locals refer to as "parcheh sheesha'i," and sometimes on other fabrics like purple or green. However, it is less commonly done on red or white fabrics. This art is primarily used to decorate mesh scarves, locally known as jelbil (or jelveil), and is also applied to decorative curtains and other traditional garments worn by women in the region. Typically, the jelbil measures about 150 cm in length and 45–80 cm in width. Sometimes, the scarf is worn directly on the head, with a cap placed on top, and its edges are pinned under the chin and wrapped around the neck and shoulders.

Patterns and Stitching Method: In Khos Doozi, the patterns are widely accepted and include various motifs such as the honeycomb, six hearts, brick-in-brick, small stars, six-pointed stars, scorpions, empty hearts, peacock designs, and more. The stitching technique is simple, with no need for pre-drawn designs on the fabric. The process begins by threading a needle with naqdeh thread and stitching the desired pattern onto the fabric. Both sides of the fabric are typically even and have a particular shine to them.

Tools Required: The tools used for Khos Doozi include a type of mesh fabric, khos in golden or silver colors, scissors, sefeh stone (used to smooth and flatten the fabric), and kam or kaman, a small wooden hoop of different sizes, used to stretch the fabric for embroidery.

Final Thoughts: Khos Doozi can be combined with other forms of embroidery, such as golabton and polk-doozi, to create stunning and memorable pieces. When traveling to provinces like Fars, Hormozgan, Kurdistan, and Baluchestan, don't miss visiting the centers where this ancient art is produced and sold. It is essential to keep traditional arts alive, which can only happen if proper training is provided to enthusiasts of the craft.
