SAEDNEWS: The police chief of Lorestan Province said three suspects were arrested during an operation to dismantle a smuggling network in the city of Pol-e Dokhtar.
According to Saednews, Police in Lorestan Province, western Iran, have announced the dismantling of a smuggling network involved in transporting military-grade ammunition.
The announcement was made on Tuesday by the provincial police chief, Yahya Elahi, according to a statement released by his office.
Elahi reported that three people were arrested in connection with the operation in the city of Pol-e Dokhtar. Acting on intelligence, local officers became suspicious of two Samand sedans carrying a total of three passengers along one of the main roads in the area.
Upon spotting the police, the suspects attempted to flee, but officers quickly intervened and disabled both vehicles using gunfire, arresting all three suspects.
A search of the vehicles uncovered more than 22,000 rounds of Kalashnikov ammunition.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the suspects had picked up the ammunition in Iran’s western provinces with the intention of transporting it to the country’s south.
Iran has beefed up security across the country following recent acts of aggression by the United States and Israel, including sabotage and spying activities linked to Israeli agents.
