According to Saed News; Iryna Zarutska, a 23-year-old Ukrainian refugee, had fled war to start a new life in Charlotte, North Carolina. On a late-night Blue Line train, her journey took a fatal turn when Decarlos Brown, a man with a long criminal history, stabbed her to death. The shocking incident has sparked national debates about crime, mental health, and justice in America.
Zarutska had boarded the train after a long day at Zepeddie’s Pizzeria, wearing khaki pants and a dark shirt. Unaware of the danger, she sat in an empty row in front of Brown, who minutes later retrieved a knife and stabbed her. Passengers attempted to help, but Zarutska succumbed to her injuries on the train.
Brown was charged with first-degree murder. Video footage of the attack shows him fidgeting and behaving erratically before the stabbing, highlighting his ongoing mental health struggles.
Brown had multiple convictions, including armed robbery, larceny, and breaking and entering. His sister and mother detailed his struggles with schizophrenia, paranoia, and hallucinations. Known for her kindness, she cared for neighbors’ pets and had ambitions of becoming a veterinary assistant. Her family described her as happiest surrounded by loved ones.
