SAEDNEWS: Qatar plans to raise its LNG production from 77 to 142 million tons per year by 2030, supplying 40% of new global demand, with major investments and long-term contracts with China, Germany, and the U.S., positioning itself as a key player in the global energy market.
According to SAEDNEWS, Qatar is undertaking one of the world's largest liquefied natural gas (LNG) expansion programs, aiming to increase its production capacity from 77 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) to 142 mtpa by 2030. This ambitious project positions Qatar to supply 40% of the world's new LNG demand over the next five years.
The expansion is centered around the North Field East (NFE) project, with commercial operations expected to commence by mid-2025. This development is part of a broader initiative that will see Qatar's LNG production rise incrementally: 110 mtpa by the end of 2026, 126 mtpa by 2027, and reaching 142 mtpa by 2030.
Strategically, Qatar has balanced its energy partnerships between Eastern and Western markets. Initially, the country signed long-term LNG contracts with Chinese companies, including a 27-year agreement with Sinopec. However, in response to geopolitical pressures, Qatar has also secured significant deals with Western nations. Notably, in December 2022, QatarEnergy signed a 15-year LNG supply agreement with ConocoPhillips for delivery to Germany starting in 2026. Additionally, Qatar has engaged in discussions with Japan for a long-term LNG supply deal, aiming to reinforce its presence in the Japanese market.
This strategic diversification underscores Qatar's commitment to becoming a dominant player in the global LNG market, balancing economic interests with geopolitical considerations.
