Howz-e Soltan Lake
This lake is located 90 kilometers from Tehran and 40 kilometers north of Qom city, on the side of the Persian Gulf highway. The route to the lake depends on your starting point. If you are coming from Qom, enter the Qom-Tehran highway and head toward the 95-kilometer sign for Tehran. Along the way, you will pass the Mahtab complex and the first hill overlooking the lake until you reach the second hill. Next to the second hill, you will see the main road to the salt mine, which is a dirt road leading you to the lake's lower area.
Alternatively, if you are coming from Tehran, after traveling 70 kilometers on the highway, when you see the tourist information sign, take the first underpass to the other side of the highway and head toward the village of Cheshmeh Shoor. A little further, you will see Howz-e Soltan Lake in front of you.
History of the Formation of Howz-e Soltan Lake
In 1883, this lake did not exist, and the main road between Tehran and Qom passed through this area. During that time, a person named Amin al-Sultan, a landowner in the region, ordered the dam on the Shour River to be broken. This action flooded the original route between Tehran and Qom, altering the road to serve his personal interests and lands. Over time, this caused the formation of Howz-e Soltan and Howz-e Marreh. The name "Howz-e Soltan" comes from a caravanserai and a water reservoir named after it, which were built during the reign of Sultan Sanjar of the Seljuk period and were used for resting and lodging travelers before the Tehran-Qom route was altered.
Howz-e Soltan Salt
Howz-e Soltan Salt Lake covers an area of approximately 240 square kilometers in the northeastern part of Qom county. During rainy seasons and the melting of snow from the surrounding heights, the amount of incoming water increases, expanding the lake's size. However, in other seasons, the lake's size decreases. Therefore, the water level of the lake is continuously fluctuating.
