Four Slopes, Two Chairlifts and One Legendary Night Trail — A Practical Guide to Shemshak Ski Resort

Skiing is an activity everyone should try at least once. Skiing on snow in the Alborz Mountains creates a stunning winter weekend. Shemshak Ski Resort, located 57 miles northeast of Tehran in the town of Shemshak within the Rudbar Qasran highland region, has become a popular spot for skiers, snow enthusiasts, and nature travelers.

This ski resort has long been a favourite hangout for professional skiers and enthusiasts of snow and mountain tourism. The roots of Shemshak’s ski history go back to the year 1337 in the Iranian calendar, and it is considered the country’s second largest ski area after Dizin. The resort sits between 2,550 and 3,050 metres above sea level and offers sweeping mountain scenery and alpine weather.

Interestingly, after infrastructure improvements in 1375 (1996/1997 Gregorian), the resort earned the status of an international ski piste from the International Ski Federation (FIS). One of Shemshak’s attractions is its night-skiing runs: yellow floodlights illuminate a bright and exciting environment so skiers can use the slopes even after sunset.

If you are an expert skier or a beginner, you can have a great time at Shemshak. The variety of runs, chairlifts and surface lifts, a ski school with professional instructors and sports-equipment shops all work together to make a perfect snowy day in the Alborz for you.

Shemshak’s proximity to Tehran and its pleasant climate have turned the area into one of the notable sights near Tehran. If you want to escape the city for a few hours, feel snow beneath your feet and enjoy fresh mountain air, continue with this SaedNews travel piece to learn more about Shemshak Ski Resort.

Where is Shemshak Ski Resort?

If you have heard the name Shemshak but don’t know exactly where it is, this famous ski area lies in the heart of the Alborz range, about 57 kilometres northeast of Tehran, and is one of Iran’s oldest and most popular ski resorts.

 Shemshak Ski Resort

The town of Shemshak sits within the pleasant-climate region of Rudbar Qasran, a part of Shemiranat County in Tehran Province. So if you plan a snowy, adventurous day trip from Tehran, Shemshak — roughly an hour’s drive — is waiting for you.

How to get to Shemshak Ski Resort

The best route to Shemshak starts from northeast Tehran. You can reach Lashgark Square via Estakhr Street in Tehranpars or by using the Baqeri, Babaei and Artesh highways to Lashgark and then take the Fasham road. After passing Fasham, Meygoon and Darbandsar, you arrive in the scenic Shemshak area and the ski complex.

Alternative routes such as Dizīn–Shemshak or Chalous–Shemshak exist, but due to adverse weather conditions they are often closed much of the year. In summer there is another approach via Karaj–Gach-sar and then the Dizīn–Shemshak road, but in winter heavy snowfall and avalanche risk usually close this route.

History of Shemshak Ski Resort

The earliest signs of skiing in Shemshak date to the 1320s (1940s) when German engineers working in the area’s mines brought skiing as a winter pastime to the snowy slopes of Shemshak. The official beginning of the resort’s development is usually dated to 1327 (1948/1949), when the first efforts to establish a proper ski piste began.

In 1337 (1958/1959) the first surface lift (a 250-metre tow built on tripods) was installed, taking skiers from Kopehchal toward the peak and opening the way for later expansions.

Four years later, in 1341 (1962/1963), the first chairlift — installed by the French company Poma — was added, marking an important step in improving the resort. With more equipment, varied runs and the hosting of professional competitions, Shemshak gradually secured its place among Iran’s notable ski areas.

A turning point came in 1375 (1996/1997) when infrastructure renovations led to international recognition from the International Ski Federation. In later years Shemshak hosted significant events such as the Asian Junior Championships with ten participating countries, and Olympic qualification slots were once contested here.

Though incidents have occurred over time, Shemshak remains one of the most popular winter destinations near Tehran. One notable accident mentioned: in Farvardin 1386 (March/April 2007) a cable derailment caused skiers to fall and six people were injured.

The resort’s different sections

Shemshak Ski Resort is among the most popular winter destinations near Tehran. The complex has four separate ski areas, standard technical facilities, and educational and support services, making it both a professional and family-friendly venue for a winter day.

— The ski pistes

There are four distinct ski runs in the Shemshak complex.

  1. Mahtab Run (پیست اسکی مهتاب)
On the western side of the complex lies the Mahtab piste, 1,950 metres long — the longest run at Shemshak. This route extends from the hotel in the south of the resort up to the summit and attracts experienced skiers seeking steeper, more thrilling slopes.

  2. Aftab Run (پیست اسکی آفتاب)
On the eastern side of the complex the Aftab run measures 1,850 metres. This run begins at the ski school and climbs toward higher elevations. With good sun exposure during the day, it is a preferred option for families and skiers who want milder conditions.

  3. Night-ski Run (پیست اسکی شب)
One of Shemshak’s most distinctive features is the night-ski piste. This 950-metre route is lit by soft yellow lights and operates 18:00–22:00 from Monday through Thursday, offering a serene, magical environment for night skiing. The quiet of the mountains, gentle lighting and crisp winter night air make this run a dreamlike destination — and night-skiing in Iran was pioneered at Shemshak.

  4. Training Slope (پیست آموزشی)
Southwest of the Aftab run sits the training slope, 400 metres in length. Intended for beginners, this gentle, safe area — staffed by experienced instructors and the on-site ski school — is ideal for newcomers to skiing.

— Chairlifts (Télésiège / تله‌سیژ)

The Aftab chairlift, launched in 1354 (1975/1976), covers 1,850 metres from the ski school in the southern sector up to the summit, rising about 550 metres in elevation.

The Mahtab chairlift — dating to 1341 (1962/1963) — starts near the hotel in the southwest, runs 1,200 metres and climbs approximately 600 metres to the peak.

— Surface lifts (T-bar / تله‌اسکی)

The Mahtab surface lift established in 1348 (1969/1970) begins north of the hotel in the Mahtab area and runs up to mid-peak with a 130-metre elevation difference.

The Kopehchal surface lift (commissioned in 1335 / 1956/1957) transports skiers from mid-peak to the main summit and covers an 80-metre elevation difference.

There is also a beginner surface lift in the training area: 400 metres long with a 40-metre elevation difference — ideal for newcomers.

— Medical aid

Shemshak places strong emphasis on skier safety. The presence of a first-aid and rescue centre at the complex ensures quick medical assistance in case of accidents.

— Ski school

Shemshak Ski School employs professional instructors and offers courses for all ages. Whether child or adult, the school provides level-based lessons so you can learn correct skiing techniques while having fun.
