Proper Containers for Storing Food in the Freezer

According to the family magazine service of Saed News, we often have more food than needed for gatherings, and we need to store the leftovers for later days. Some people also prepare meals for their working days during the weekends and store them in the freezer.

Which Container Is Best for Freezing?

Freezer-safe containers come in various materials, each with its own characteristics. These containers can be made of plastic, glass, ceramic, or stainless steel.

Plastic Containers: Lightweight, often with transparent lids, making the contents visible. They are resistant to breakage.

Glass Containers: Fully transparent, aesthetically pleasing, but heavier than plastic containers.

Ceramic Containers: Opaque with often transparent lids, heavier, and available in diverse designs and colors.

Stainless Steel Containers: Rust-resistant and easy to clean, though they can stain quickly. Durable with lower weight, but the opaque body and lid make it hard to see the contents.

1

Secure Lids

The best containers for freezing should have secure lids to hold liquid foods like stews. If the lid is secure, the container can be turned upside down without spilling. Different sealing methods like plastic bands or locks ensure the best storage of food, preventing the smell from escaping and transferring to other foods.

Pyrex Glass Containers

Pyrex containers are a type of glass container that withstands extreme heat and cold without thermal shock. These can be used in freezers, microwaves, and dishwashers. They have plastic lids that do not melt in high heat, making them safe for health.

2

Containers for Storing Fruits and Vegetables

Plastic containers with airtight, lockable lids can keep vegetables like lettuce fresh. However, storing summer fruits like apricots, peaches, pears, and plums in plastic bags for a long time can speed up ripening and spoilage. Use dry, open plastic containers instead.

Why Use Freezer-Safe Containers?

Preventing Food Spoilage: Microbes can spoil food quickly, so store food in the freezer instead of at room temperature. Freezer-safe containers prevent air circulation, which can spoil food.

3

Maintaining Flavor and Smell: In environments like refrigerators and freezers, various foods are stored together. Without proper containers, air circulation can mix flavors and smells, degrading food quality.

Organizing the Freezer: Using plastic bags for leftovers can create clutter and make finding items difficult. Freezer-safe containers provide better organization and easy access to food.

Tips for Buying Food Storage Containers

Know the Food Type: Different containers are needed for cold or hot foods. Avoid storing hot food in plastic containers.

Size Variety: Food storage containers often come in sets of various sizes. Choose a container with minimal empty space after adding food.

Secure Lids: Containers with tightly sealed lids prevent spills.

Thermal Resistance: Containers for refrigerators and freezers should withstand thermal shocks.
