Just like your skin and hair, your nails also need special care.
According to the family magazine service of Saed News, different seasons require specific care for body parts. Here’s how to care for your nails in the fall and winter. Remember to keep them moisturized and trimmed regularly.
1. Keep Your Nails Moisturized
Just like your skin, your nails need moisture to stay strong and healthy during fall and winter. Use a moisturizer after every contact with water. If you often forget, keep a small container of moisturizer near the sink. When you apply moisturizer to your skin after a shower, make sure to cover your nails as well.
2. Use Unscented Moisturizers
Scented moisturizers can dry out your nails. Focus on the health of your nails rather than the pleasant scent.
3. Soak Your Nails
Once a week, soak your nails in warm (not hot) water for five minutes. After drying them, apply a greasy substance like Vaseline or olive oil to your nails and the surrounding skin. Massage the oil into your nails and the surrounding area for a few minutes to let it absorb. Then, wear cotton gloves and wait for an hour.
4. Wear Gloves
When going outside, wear gloves to protect your nails. Cold and winter winds can dry and damage your nails.
5. Choose the Right Nail Polish Remover
Acetone can dry out and damage your nails. Be selective with your nail polish remover during colder months. Choose a product that doesn't contain acetone. To be safer, try to reduce the use of nail polish removers as much as possible.
6. Treat Your Nails Gently
If you want to care for your nails, avoid using them as tools, stop biting them, and don't pick at the skin around them.
7. Allow Your Nails to Breathe
If you always have nail polish on, your nails won’t be able to breathe, making them weak and discolored. It’s better to let your nails be polish-free for a few days every week or every two weeks.
8. Keep Your Nails Short
While you might love long nails, cold weather makes them more vulnerable. Keeping them short reduces the risk of damage.
9. Wear Gloves When Washing Dishes
When washing dishes, wear a pair of cotton gloves under plastic gloves. Avoid using your nails as tools, such as to remove stickers. Just as the sun can damage your skin, it can also harm your nails. Apply sunscreen to your hands and nails throughout the day.
10. Use Less Nail Polish
In fall and winter, reduce the frequency of applying nail polish. Let your nails get some oxygen. Avoid products containing formaldehyde. Include gelatin in your diet as it helps strengthen nails. It's crucial to disinfect manicure tools. When getting your nails done at a salon, bring your own manicure set.
