The winner of the design competition was a 24-year-old architect named Hossein Amanat, a graduate of the Faculty of Fine Arts at Tehran University. Construction of the Azadi Tower began on November 2, 1969, and after 28 months of work, it was completed on January 13, 1972, and named Shahyad Tower. After the revolution, Shahyad Tower was renamed Azadi Tower.
