SAEDNEWS: Moscow is deeply concerned about Israel’s decision to recognize Somaliland as it goes against Somalia's sovereignty, a Russian diplomat has said.
Moscow is deeply concerned about Israel’s decision to recognize Somaliland, saying it undermines the sovereignty, territorial integrity, and unity of the Federal Republic of Somalia, Dina Gilmutdinova, senior counsellor at the Russian mission to the United Nations, stated.
“Like the majority of our colleagues on the Security Council, we are deeply concerned about Israel’s politically motivated decision to recognize the sovereignty of Somaliland. It goes against the sovereignty, territorial integrity, and unity of the Federal Republic of Somalia,” she said during a UN Security Council meeting.
Gilmutdinova added that Russia understands the strong reaction from the Somali government, the African Union, regional countries, and Arab-Muslim nations. “We express concern about the possible consequences, including a potential escalation of tensions in the Horn of Africa and beyond,” she noted.
The diplomat emphasized that Russia supports resolving Somali internal differences through an inclusive national dialogue free from external interference. “We would also like to stress that decisions like the one made by the Israeli cabinet risk complicating Mogadishu’s efforts to combat Al-Shabaab terrorists,” she said.
