Iran Nuclear Talks Resume as Russia and China Push for 6-Month Extension

According to SaedNews, citing ISNA, diplomats announced that Russia and China have finalized a draft United Nations Security Council resolution to extend Resolution 2231, also known as the JCPOA, for six months.

Diplomats said the draft resolution, observed by Reuters, calls on all parties to the Iran nuclear agreement to immediately resume dialogue and the implementation of their commitments.

This development comes as the three European countries that are members of the JCPOA—Germany, the United Kingdom, and France, known as the European Troika—sent a letter on Thursday to the UN Security Council members, stating that they had activated the snapback mechanism to reinstate UN sanctions against Iran.

The snapback mechanism, included in Security Council Resolution 2231, allows the parties to the deal to restore international sanctions against a country if it is claimed to be “non-compliant.” According to the JCPOA text, this mechanism is only valid if all parties are adhering to their commitments.

Iranian officials emphasize that the three European countries have lost the legal and moral authority to use this mechanism due to their failure to fulfill economic commitments and their silence regarding U.S. actions.

Iran has also stated that its response to the reinstatement of sanctions will be “severe.”
